Howard University Hospital, formerly known as Freedmen's Hospital, was founded in 1862 to provide medical care to freed slaves and became a major hospital for the African American community in Washington, D.C.
It was transferred to Howard University in 1967 and serves as a teaching hospital.
The Freedmen's Bureau managed the hospital from 1865, providing funding and support until the Bureau's dissolution in 1872 due to lack of funding, Southern opposition, and political changes.
The Bureau faced challenges under Andrew Johnson's administration, including reduced funding and opposition from Southern states.
